Nature and History Around

The surroundings of North Eastern Vidzeme and especially of Gulbene - Aluksne narrow gauge railway are rich in picturesque scenes. The scenery around Gulbene in some places can be associated with the plains of Zemgale, but coming closer to Aluksne we can see the areas with small hills and rivers. This district of Latvia is proud of its picturesque lakes and large tracts of forest, where most variable species of plants and animals can be encountered. Therefore it is not coincidence that these areas have been populated already in ancient times. Latgalian tribe settlements, brick castles of German knights, estates, churches, pubs and farmer houses all bear witness of the centuries of intense economic life of the district. The narrow gauge railway built at the beginning of 20th century became an important driving force for the development of the district, but nowadays it has become one of the most attractive historical evidences.
